Understanding Warning Signs of A Stroke

According to statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 795,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke. Of that number, 140,000 Americans die annually as a result of stroke — that is 1 out of every 20 deaths in the US. For 4 out of 5 people who suffer a stroke, the stroke itself is the first symptom. A preventative Life Line Screening can help by identifying risk factors that may increase the likelihood of a stroke or other cardiovascular disease. You can learn more about Carotid Artery Disease screening here.

The chance of disability as a result from a stroke is significant. When a person has a stroke, blood circulation to the brain gets cut off. This can occur from a blockage, or from bleeding into the brain.

The most common warning signs are called FAST:

  • Facial drooping: usually only one side that will droop downwards and be difficult to move.
  • Arm weakness on one side.
  • Speech difficulty or inability to produce words.
  • Time is of the essence.
