U.S. News and World Report’s Patient Advice reporter, Lisa Esposito, recently wrote a very good article entitled “What You Should Know About Ischemic Stroke.”
We wanted to bring attention to this article because it is thorough and easy to understand. We particularly value the paragraphs on stroke risk and prevention, because Esposito correctly discusses atherosclerosis, a buildup of fat and cholesterol in the arteries as the underlying cause of stroke.
Esposito also covers some lesser-known causes of stroke, including sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation (something Life Line Screening tests for).
One cause not mentioned in the article comes from research actually conducted using Life Line Screening data. It is air pollution. Researchers at New York University used LLS data to demonstrate that air pollution contributes to atherosclerosis in the arteries of the neck.
Get educated on what stroke is and how it can be detected and treated. With almost 130,000 deaths a year due to stroke (1 out of every 20 deaths), we all need to be up to date and understand our risk.
